Volunteering for the PTA or at the Weddington Elementary School can be a rewarding and exciting way to contribute to your child's school experience. To volunteer at school events, you must complete a background check. Volunteer forms can be found in the school office only.

The Weddington Elementary School PTA is currently looking for the following committee leaders and assistants:
Bingo, Baskets, & Burgers
Chairs: Chris McNeill, Pam Holley, Janie Bernard
A night of family fun featuring a catered meal, multiple games of bingo with prizes, and our annual viewing and raffle of all the baskets created by each of our classrooms. This event is scheduled for Friday Night, October 23rd. We will need many volunteers to help with all three segments of this very fun-filled night!
Blue Moon Volunteers (General)
Chair: Janie Bernard
Volunteers are needed to help with general school-wide events during the school year such as picture day, president’s physical fitness testing and field day. The coordinator will call on an as-needed basis with a few days’ notice. Commitments are usually for two hours at a time. Many volunteers are needed.
Book Fair
Chair: Leslie Gaylord
The book fair is an annual event scheduled in November. You will work closely with the media center specialist to host this fun event held in the media center. Book Fair volunteers help set up, take down, and work as cashiers. All profits from the book fair are used to purchase books for the media center and the classrooms.
Book Room
Chair: Robyn Kralich
Volunteers are needed to organize and shelve books in the Book Room.
Box Tops
Chair: Laura Shafer
The collection of General Mills’ Box Tops for Education is a fundraiser for the PTA. Volunteers are needed to help communicate the program guidelines to families and help to create a little fun in the collection process. Volunteers are also needed to collect box tops monthly, count, sort, and submit the box tops for reimbursement.
Bulletin Board
Chair: Paula DeJong
The committee is responsible for maintaining four different bulletin boards in the school. Individuals are needed to created new ideas and assist in changing the bulletin boards out each month.
Change for Change
Chair: Sheri Fremin
This is an event where the children collect loose change over a course of time and donate it to a charitable cause. Last year we focused on two charities –Kids First of the Carolinas and Relay For Life. The committee comes up with ideas for hallway contests and prizes as incentives. Change for Change is scheduled for the spring.
Character Education
Chair: Elizabeth Walsh
This committee plans activities that focus on good citizenship and community service. Projects include such things as school supplies, canned food, toy, and coat drives. Volunteers are needed throughout the year to plan and implement these events.
Coffee Night
Chair: Lisa Macia
This event is scheduled as part of our annual book fair in November. Volunteers in this committee will be responsible for coffee, desserts, set up and clean up. They also have the opportunity to find special guest readers to entertain families while they take a break from book shopping and stop by the coffee house.
Cultural Arts
Chair: Elizabeth Walsh
This committee plans as well as implements programs that put emphasis on developing an appreciation for the arts, such as music, dance, theater arts, literature, visual arts, and photography. It also helps focus awareness on all the different cultures around the world. Volunteers are needed to help during Cultural Arts Week in April. This committee is also responsible for planning one special event per grade level during the year.
Earth Club
Chair: Sanna Tucker
Earth Club's main purpose is to help out with school's recycling program. Club is open to everyone who studies, works and volunteers at WDES. Occasional social events will be organized.
Faculty and Staff Appreciation
Co-Chairs: Michelle Egan & Sheri Geraghty
This committee plans events throughout the year to show the faculty and staff how much they are appreciated by the parents and students. These events include a welcome back lunch in August, a Valentine breakfast, as well as treats and surprises throughout the year. Many volunteers are needed to help!
Family Food Night
Chair: Debbie Cramer
This event is sponsored throughout the year with various restaurants in our area. On designated nights, a percentage of total sales coming from WDES families at that particular restaurant is given back to the school. Volunteers are needed to help schedule and advertise this event.
Field Day
Chair: Traci Colley
Field Day is an annual event that is primarily coordinated by the principal and specials teachers and is set up to promote an Olympics-type environment of sportsmanship, fun, and achievement. Volunteers are needed before, during, and after the event to help direct students and teachers, pass out ribbons and assist with the games.
Fifth Grade Celebration
Chair: Deanna Donofrio
The committee plans and implements fifth grade recognition activities and events. Volunteers are needed to help with the end of year graduation and celebration for the fifth-grade students.
Grounds Beautification
Chair: AVAILABLE
The committee works to enhance the school grounds by planting flowers, shrubs and trees, adding new mulch, watering and weeding gardens. Volunteers are needed to help on workdays held several times during the year.
Hospitality/Baked Goods
Chair: Susan Roof
Volunteers are needed to make or purchase food items for staff and teacher events.
Legislative
Chair: Available
Keeps up-to-date and communicates to the PTA members information about county and state politics and work in other organizations affecting public schools and students. Volunteers are needed to work as a team to attend monthly School Board, Town and County Commissioners meetings, make reports at the monthly PTA meetings and write articles for the monthly PTA newsletters.
Media Center
Chair: Debbie Schneider
Volunteers are needed to assist our media specialists on a weekly basis. Commitment is either one or two hours per week. Volunteers will be responsible for checking books in and out and shelving books. Media specialists will train you. It is a wonderful way to interact with the children.
Mother-Daughter Event
Co-Chairs: AVAILABLE
Volunteers are needed to help plan this special event that is scheduled for February. Help will be needed to make and distribute invitations, receive RSVP’s, coordinate theme, food decorations, entertainment, and photographs, as well as volunteering the night of the event.
Odyssey of the Mind
Chair: AVAILABLE
Coaches/volunteers will lead a team or teams of students on a year-long journey of expanding their minds in the realm of drama, physics, math, literature, music, language, science, etc… Could meet as much as once per week, after school, in preparation for a regional competition in March. Office Volunteers
Chair: Janice Bowers
Volunteers are needed to work in the office on a regular basis throughout the school year. They help answer phones, distribute mail, make copies and assist visitors in the school.
Reflections
Chair: AVAILABLE
Committee coordinates the national PTA program designed to provide opportunities for children to express themselves creatively through the arts (painting, collage, drawing, photography, literature, and music.) Volunteers are needed to determine local deadlines, distribute packets and entry forms to the students, secure judges from outside the school, coordinate the judging, present local awards to the winners and forward the entries from local winners to the state level.
School Store
Chair(s): Pam Holley and AVAILABLE (Volunteer Coordinator)
The committee chairperson will do the ordering and inventory work and will coordinate the volunteer storekeepers to guide/help the student council during the store’s open hours each week. The store is usually open two mornings a week before school starts and one lunch time each week.
Sponsorship
Chair: Jamie Guiliani
Volunteers are needed to call and collect cash and in-kind donations to the school from area restaurants and businesses for various events throughout the year.
Student Recognition
Chair: AVAILABLE
Recognizes student achievements throughout the year and coordinates the Honor Roll program at the end of each grading period.
Yearbook
Chairs: Melissa Wyatt & Sheri Geraghty
The committee photographs and compiles submitted photographs of students to be used in the yearbook. Yearbooks are available for purchase.
Young Author’s Day
Chair: AVAILABLE
The committee orders and distributes blank books to be written-in and illustrated by our children. We will have a published author or illustrator speak to all the students. Volunteers may also help search for the author or illustrator to visit the school as well as to assist with the program the day the author is visiting.
